Despite all intoxicants being forbidden in Islam, drug and alcohol abuse has increased within the Muslim community and especially amongst the youth. Many Muslim parents do not feel confident in their knowledge of drugs and alcohol and subsequently find it difficult talking to their children about these issues. Due to this being such a taboo subject, many parents do not discuss such problems openly. There is anecdotal evidence that in many cases the problem child is exported “back home” or a wife is imported as a “cure”.
Asim Ilyas, a High Road Leyton resident, has responded to this problem by becoming accredited as a Drugs Educator”. Asim took part in a programme that trains Muslims to enable parents to have the confidence and ability to discuss sensitive issues with their children by increasing their knowledge about drugs and alcohol. Asim says “I am now able to give parents an open and safe platform to discuss issues by organising workshops.
